DIY - Laundry Area Makeover

To this...
...from this
We inherited a pretty standard laundry area in the basement when we moved in - meaning dust, dirt, stains and rust all over the area.

Having seen this idea on Pinterest, I decided that I would give it a go myself. Really happy with the results! Now doing the washing won't be as depressing :)

Time: 25 hours (best guess! I'll have to start tracking)

Cost: $130.60

1. Removed old sink and faucet.

Kept the original pipes and faucet pieces in a bucket in case I needed them again (I did)
I used this Lowe's video to understand how to take it apart (and to replace it too) - surprisingly easy! Although I was at first overwhelmed by all the steps, I just took it bit by bit.

2.  Stenciled pegboard

a) Drew a diagram with the measurements of all the nooks and crannies I needed to fit the pegboard around (e.g., pipes, electrical wires)

b) Cut the necessary shapes out of white pegboards (purchased cheaply at Home Depot) before painting using a jigsaw (I've a great Black & Decker one from Amazon)

c) Painted the boards using a stencil. I used spare paint from our bedroom makeover. It takes some getting used to to align the stencil correctly and avoid too much smudging! I ended up abandoning my first one altogether as it ended up a little all over the place!

d) Used wooden blocks (cut from pine boards from Lowes using a circular saw) and attached these to the wall where the pegboards would hang

e) Attached the pegboards to the wooden blocks using wood screws

3. Painted the walls

I used a Benjamin Moore primer and Chantilly Lace - which I had used in our bathroom makeover

4. Painted the step where the old utility sink was

I used Benjamin Moore's Ebony Slate - which I also used in our bathroom. I LOVE this color.

5. Spray painted the pipes

I used Sun Yellow from Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch range. After applying two coats and allowing to dry, I sealed it with a clear coat

6. Installed new sink & replaced old faucet

I picked up a great utility sink from Home Depot for $54. I had purchased a new faucet but after getting some paint thinner and some elbow grease at the old one, it scrubbed up nicely so I decided to save the $50 I had dropped on the new faucet.

Again I used the Lowe's video above on how to install the faucet.

7. Clean everything with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

It made everything look brand new!

Next steps:

I'm waiting on some pine boards I've spray painted red to dry and will hang them on the pegboards using pegboard clips

I've also spray painted some mason jars from Goodwill gold to hold detergent and bounce sheets

Finally, I've put down a mat I picked up in Lowe's for $12 that says "Laundry" on it
